Basic Safety Course – $65
Renters must take and pass this course to rent and go on their own. Not a prerequisite for guided tours.
Daily: 8:30am or 1pm
3 hours split between the classroom and water.
Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. Having demonstrated calamitous capacities, this body of water has been deemed an inland sea. It is vital that we equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to keep yourself safe out on the big lake, in the Apostle Islands, and beyond. The classroom portion of this course will provide participants with basic navigation skills, route-specific tips, introductory VHF radio communication skills, advice on when to/not to launch, insight into wildlife activity on the islands, and more. On the water, participants will sharpen their paddling skills by practicing basic paddle strokes, learning how to wet exit, performing paddle float self-rescues, and completing the partner t-rescue.

Private Lessons

We’re passionate about the sport of sea kayaking and about sharing our knowledge. If you are interested in taking your skills to the next level, we’re here for you. Private lessons are individualized and taken at the pace you’re most comfortable with.
“Because of Lake Superior’s power and unpredictability, the National Park Service does NOT recommend the use of small open boats, canoes, open cockpit or sit-upon kayaks, and paddleboards for travel between islands or to the sea caves. A sea kayak is the recommended kayak that should be used in the Apostle Islands.”
